N.W. 36th Bridge Replacement


This contract included two distinct projects. The first (425979-1-52-01) included milling and resurfacing, median modifications, sidewalk, and ADA ramp construction along N.W. 36th Street. The limits of this project extend west of Lee Drive to the east of Coolidge Drive. The second (418065-2-52-01) included major reconstruction including the replacement of the N.W. 36th Street bascule bridge over the Miami Canal. This project also included milling and resurfacing, drainage, lighting, signalization, and minor intersection modifications of NW 36th Street at N.W. South River Drive and NW North River Drive. During this project, the functionally obsolete Hanover Bascule Bridge was replaced with 2 fixed concrete bridges.


In this design-build project, A&P Engineers was responsible for replacing the aforementioned bridge. As this bridge commonly experiences high traffic volumes, the bridge replacement was carried out in phases. The typical section of these bridges was conceived using 54” pre-stressed Florida I-Beams (54”) and pre-stressed pile foundations. The eastern abutment required a bulkhead wall using pre-cast panels and piles carefully laid out to avoid conflict with existing utilities. Some of the other challenges our firm overcame included a complex demolition of existing steel and concrete members, various temporary retaining walls, and a temporary water intrusion wall. We were also responsible for the design of signal support structures and permanent cast in place retaining walls.
